Best Image Formats for Social Media

Last updated: February 4, 2026

The simple answer

  • Photos: JPEG (or WebP if the platform supports it)
  • Graphics/text: PNG (or WebP)
  • When in doubt: JPEG at a reasonable quality

Most social platforms re-encode your upload anyway. The goal is to upload something that looks good after re-encoding — and isn’t ridiculously oversized.

Compress an image

Why platforms re-compress

Social apps optimize for speed and storage. They often convert images to their preferred formats, resize them, and apply their own compression settings. If you upload a clean, reasonably sized image, the final result usually looks better.

Practical sizing advice

Exact recommended sizes change, but a good rule is:

  • Don’t upload huge originals (like 6000px wide) unless you have a specific reason.
  • Export close to the display size, typically 1080–2048px wide depending on use.
  • Keep sharp edges for text-heavy graphics by using PNG (or higher quality).

JPEG vs PNG vs WebP for social uploads

  • JPEG: best for photos; smaller files; can show artifacts if quality is too low.
  • PNG: best for graphics/text; bigger files; preserves crisp edges and transparency.
  • WebP: often smaller; great for web; platform support varies for uploads.

Quality tips

If your post contains faces, gradients, or subtle lighting, don’t over-compress. Start around 82–90%. If it’s a simple photo with lots of texture (e.g. outdoors), you can often go lower.
